How to: Setting up a new MISys Server

Solution

Setting up a new MISys Server consists of three phases. This article will provide you with the steps you will need to take to complete them:

Phase 1: Install MISys on your new Server machine, test that install and make sure that you can log into the Sample Database (MISAMPCO).

Phase 2: Assign your MISys Licenses and restore your MISys database to the new server.

Phase 3: Redirect the MISys Clients on your workstations.

Phase 1 - Installing the MISys software on your new Server

Download both the MISys Installation Guide and Installation file using the links below:

MISys Installation Guide - this guide will walk you through both the preparation of your new Server as well as the installation process.

NOTE: If you choose to run the installation using the Custom/Client option be sure to include the MISys Client.

MISys Installation File - this link to the installation file is also available in the above guide as well.

Once the installation has completed, launch your MISys Client and log into the Sample Company by selecting MISAMPCO from the Company drop down menu. Enter a User of ADMIN and a Password of password (all lowercase).

If you are able to log into the Sample Company successfully you are ready to move to the next phase.

Phase 2 - Assigning your MISys Licenses and restoring your MISys database to the new Server

When you are ready to go live with your new server, have all Users log out of MISys and perform the following steps:

  1. Log into MISys Server Administration on your current Server Machine and click on the Companies tab.
  2. Select your company, click Backup As, making note of the file path where company backup is stored and click Save.
  3. Navigate to that Backup file and make sure that it is there and that the Backup was successful.
  4. Copy that Backup file to a shared (or portable) drive that you'll be able to access from the new Server.
  5. Contact Customer Service (802.457.4600) and let them know what you're doing and that you need us to reset your Hardware Key because you're changing server machines. Wait for confirmation that your key has been reset before proceeding to the next step.
  6. Move to the new server and use Right-Click Run as Administrator to Log into the Server Administration.
  7. Navigate to the Licenses Tab, enter your Serial Number, and click Save.
  8. Navigate to the Owner Tab and click Activate.
  9. Navigate back to the License Tab, click Save and select Update from MISys to bring in your MISys Licenses.
  10. Navigate to the System Tab and Click Get Program Updates to ensure you are running the current version.
  11. Navigate to the Companies Tab and click New.
  12. Select your live company from the drop-down menu and create it.
  13. Highlight your Company ID and click Restore From.
  14. Navigate to the Backup you made in steps 2-4. You should see a successful message once the backup has been restored. NOTE: If the backup is from an older MISys version, you will see a prompt to convert the data.

Phase 3 - Redirecting your MISys Clients to the new server

Each machine running the MISys Client needs to update their server URL:

  1. Bring up the MISys Client Login form.
  2. Click Edit | Server Connection.
  3. Select Internet/Intranet.
  4. Change the Server URL, to point to your new Server using the format of http://NEWSERVERNAME/sbmwebservice64/miwebservice.asmx

NOTE: In the above step 4. you would replace NEWSERVERNAME with your new server's name or IP address.

At this point have each of the client machine's try logging into your live company and examine the data to ensure everything looks good.
